A few weeks ago I found these three gloss white mirrored sconces on sale at ZGallerie. I’ve been searching for something graphic to add to one of my living room walls. These are perfect! Since they didn’t come with hurricanes to hold a candle, I decided to make my own with patterned paper I had in my home art studio. The paper hurricanes hide the inexpensive tea light candles I happened to have from previous parties. You can’t beat the price of this project: free to me! Here’s the sconce hurricane how-to:

1. For 3 sconces, start with two 12″ x 12″ pieces of paper. You can order the decorative paper I used from Martha Stewart Crafts (on sale now).

2. Measure the interior circumference of your circle by multiplying the diameter of the circle by pi (3.14).

3. Cut paper to fit inside the circumference of the sconce candle holder overlapping at least 1/4 inch.  Mine are 6″ tall and 10″ wide.

4. Add a strip of double sided tape to the outside edge of the paper and roll to create a cylinder.

5. Slide the paper cylinder over the tea light candle. Be careful not to light the paper on fire.

This Christmas season our home shines with candle light glowing from each window. The candles serve as a gentle reminder, amid the holiday hubbub, to take a momentary pause to remember our loved ones. I also can’t help but think of the Christmas Star that revealed the birth of Jesus to the wise men and later led them to Bethlehem. From my home to yours, I wish you all a happy Christmas season.

Welcome to my 2009 Christmas home tour! This year I’m using red and white for my dining room mantel (photos above). Dried red trees coordinate with my red wreath. My white pebble table runner gives the perfect textural background for the room.
